Sector coupling of transport and energy

%

In 2024, approximately 60% of net electricity was generated from renewable energy sources.

%

In 2024, the share of renewable energy sources in the transportation sector stood at 7.2%.

TWh

Depending on market ramp-up scenarios, electric passenger vehicles are expected to account for approximately 110 to 130 TWh of additional electricity demand by 2030.

  • Renewable energy facilities and grid infrastructure must be expanded systematically and at an accelerated pace to enable the transition to renewable energy in industrial processes, heating, and transportation.
  • The various sectors, energy sources, and infrastructure should be considered and planned together.
  • The regulatory framework must be further developed to reduce uncertainties in the planning process and facilitate the market penetration of new technologies.
  • The digitalization of energy infrastructure should be advanced.

Sector coupling as a key technology for the energy and mobility transition

The transition of transportation to zero-emission powertrains is accompanied by a stronger integration of the transportation sector with the energy sector. Consequently, power grids must be designed to handle higher demand volumes and managed intelligently. At the same time, however, vehicle batteries can also serve as buffers during the energy sector’s transition to renewable energy, contributing to the flexibility and stability of the energy supply system. Furthermore, hydrogen production not only enables the storage of excess renewable energy but also its use to support the grid. This helps to efficiently integrate renewable energy and ensure its demand-driven use in the industrial and mobility sectors.

The interconnection and holistic view of the sectors enables numerous synergy effects that can offset the fluctuations in renewable energy. At the same time, this increases the complexity of decision-making, planning, and implementation processes, as many influencing factors, stakeholders, and differing interests converge.

Drivers of Innovation for the Hamburg Metropolitan Region

Due to its geographical location, the Hamburg metropolitan region offers ideal conditions for the generation and use of renewable energy. The region boasts a diverse range of stakeholders and innovation fields and is establishing itself as a leading hub for cross-sectoral applications.

hysolutions works together with partners from the region on a wide range of innovation projects and solutions for integrating the electricity sector with the transportation sector, aiming to enable joint management of both sectors and thereby help drive breakthroughs in both the mobility and energy transitions. The focus is on introducing technological and societal innovations and improving the framework conditions for sustainable development. The projects help overcome existing barriers between markets, market participants, industries, and infrastructures. The range of project topics extends from the electrification of bus depots and the digitalization of charging and control processes to research into Vehicle-to-Grid and Vehicle-to-Home approaches.
