Auf einen Blick
- Reduction of air pollution, especially in metropolitan areas.
- Conversion of the entire fleet to alternative propulsion systems is necessary.
- Further testing of innovative technologies and alternative fuels is required.
Inland waterway transport plays a particularly important role in Germany and Europe, especially for logistics to the hinterland. Shifting traffic from road to inland waterways is of particular environmental significance, as inland waterway vessels can transport very large volumes of goods safely, efficiently, and with low noise pollution. Further
incentives are therefore needed for investments in zero-emission and low-emission propulsion systems and for the retrofitting or conversion of power generation facilities.
To support the transition to alternative propulsion systems, hysolutions brings together companies from the maritime sector with stakeholders from other industries, develops concepts, and supports projects focused on sustainable propulsion methods and the necessary infrastructure. For example, as part of the innovation and technology centers in Germany, hysolutions supports the implementation of H2AM (Hanseatic Hydrogen for Aviation and Maritime) activities regarding the use of hydrogen and derivatives in maritime and inland waterway shipping in Hamburg.
Förderung
The Federal Ministry of Transport and the Federal Ministry of Economics have launched various funding programs to support the development and deployment of fuel cells and alternative energy sources in the maritime sector. These programs aim to reduce the environmental impact of shipping and promote the use of sustainable energy.
Specific funding measures are available for seagoing vessels and inland waterway vessels, offering, among other things, financial support for research and development projects, the construction of prototypes, and the retrofitting of existing vessels with alternative propulsion technologies. The EU also supports such initiatives as part of its environmental and climate protection strategies to steer the maritime industry toward a more sustainable future.
Funding Program for the Sustainable Modernization of Inland Waterway Vessels
Starting in 2024, due to current developments in EU state aid law, the funding program for the sustainable modernization of inland waterway vessels will consist of three funding guidelines, namely the “Guideline on the Promotion of the Sustainable Modernization of Inland Waterway Vessels to Shift Freight Transport from Road to Waterways,” the “Guideline for the Promotion of Zero-Emission and Low-Emission Propulsion Systems and the Sustainable Modernization of Inland Waterway Vessels,” and the “Guideline for the Promotion of the Retrofitting of Emission Reduction Equipment on Inland Waterway Vessels.” As of January 1, 2027, the three funding guidelines are to be merged back into a single guideline.
Climate Protection Program 2030
This program supports measures that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including the use of alternative energy sources in shipping.
